With a population of 58,000, Östersund is the only city in the region of Jämtland in the heart of Sweden, situated by the Lake Storsjön.

Östersund is renowned for winter sports, although there's something for everyone. In addition to a wide selection of shops, food lovers can feast in one of the many delicatessens and restaurants specialising in local produce throughout the city.

The region of Jämtland is famous for many culinary specialities, including cured moose, reindeer meat, cheese, bread and chocolates.

Visitors can also take a stroll around the Jamtli Museum, have a swim in the public baths of Storsjöbadet, enjoy a trip on the steamship Thomée, walk through the Moose Garden and visit Frösö Zoo.

One of Östersund's most infamous residents is the Great Lake Monster Storsjöodjure, also known as Storsie. (Sweden's version of Scotland's Loch Ness Monster!). The first Storsjoodjuret sighting dates back to 1635, with more than 200 reported sightings since then. Witnesses have described it as looking like a water horse, others have called it a serpent.
